SPECIALTY & DIRECT TRADE

Specialty & Direct Trade from Usawa: Honest to the Core

At Usawa, specialty coffee is not just about taste, but also about honesty, sustainability and inclusivity. Our process, from farm to cup, is designed to not only deliver an exceptional product, but also to make a positive impact on people and the planet.

1. Direct Trade: A Step Towards Fair Trade

Our coffee is purchased directly from farmers in countries such as Tanzania, Colombia, Indonesia, Rwanda, Peru and Brazil via the 'direct trade' model. This means that we work together without the intervention of traders who determine prices and increase margins. The result? A fair price for the farmers and their families. Direct trade guarantees that the proceeds go to the right place, allowing the farmers to strengthen their communities. This direct collaboration is one of the conditions for being allowed to bear the title 'specialty coffee'.

2. Specialty Coffee: The Highest Standard

To be called specialty coffee, the coffee must meet strict requirements. The Specialty Coffee Association (SCA), a global non-profit organization, has developed a points system that requires a score of at least 80 points. Only coffee beans that have been hand-picked and carefully processed can achieve this standard. This not only guarantees unparalleled quality, but also that the coffee bean has been treated with care and attention. It is this dedication to quality that makes Usawa coffee unique.

3. Freshness as the Main Ingredient

At Usawa, freshness is essential. Our coffee beans are usually roasted in the week of shipment, so you always enjoy the most pronounced flavors and aromas. We have a strict freshness limit of the week in which you order, so you can be sure that your specialty coffee always tastes optimal.

4. Inclusive Packaging

After roasting, our coffee beans are packed by a dedicated team of colleagues with physical disabilities. This process not only contributes to delivering high-quality coffee, but also provides employment and opportunities for people who are often excluded from the labor market. Inclusivity is a core value at Usawa, and every package tells that story.

5. Visit the Usawa Distillery Shop

Our specialty coffee is available for sale via our webshop and in our own roastery shop in a characteristic monumental building in Veghel. In the shop you can experience the craft of coffee roasting and get acquainted with our assortment. Each type of specialty coffee in our webshop contains information about the origin of the beans, so you know exactly where your cup of coffee comes from. In addition, we offer cups, cans and other coffee gifts—perfect for sharing with others.

6. Sustainable and Enriching

Roasting sustainable coffee requires expertise to bring out the unique flavor profiles of each bean. Our roastery in Veghel works with precision and passion, so that every cup tells a story. This makes Usawa specialty coffee not only a delight for the senses, but also a conscious choice that does good for the world.
